Know Your Heroes: Trevor Hanagan

Know Your Heroes showcases the many different people and roles that make up #TeamUHN. We celebrate these people, who strive to make the world a healthier place every day.

Name: Trevor Hanagan

Title: Corporate Security Advisor

Hometown: I grew up in St. Thomas, Ontario and now live in Downtown Toronto.

Years in health care: 16

I decided to get into health care because I grew up in a family of nurses (Forensic Psychiatry) and have fond memories of their stories and experiences. I also have deeply held beliefs that socialized medicine and barrier-free access to it is paramount to all persons.

My role here at UHN is to provide training and support for our frontline Security Team.

COVID-19 has affected me by not being able to travel as much I would like to during the summer months. My second niece came into the world during the height of COVID and I had to postpone our first meeting by several months.

The thing I love the most about my job is that it has never felt like a job! I leave my family for 8 hours a day to spend it with my extended family here at UHN.

The most incredible thing I’ve seen at work is the Emergency Department teams work a “Code” in the resuscitation room. Amazing people doing amazing work! I’ve learned so much from the multidisciplinary teams in our Emergency Departments who always take the time to answer all of my questions.

I’m inspired by the resiliency and dedication of those around me at UHN.

One of my personal heroes is my Director, Todd Milne. Todd has always been there as a great mentor and friend. “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” – Rosalynn Carter

I sometimes worry about our UHN Security Team. They are often the first and last line of defense when things aren’t going well and I often worry about their safety and that of their families that they go home to.

I’ve found joy recently from short road trips on the weekends down to our lake house in Amherstburg.

My favourite movie is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan because I’m a die-hard Trekkie!

My ideal day off is spending the day binge-watching Netflix or playing Xbox. It’s usually short lived until I am pulled off the couch by my partner Francesco to enjoy the great outdoors.
